Areas of Specialty and Certifications
I didn't realize there were areas of specialty certification credentials within the field of occupational therapy. After reviewing the chart in the book and checking out the AOTA website, I am very interested in a specialty certification in school systems. I came into this program interested in early intervention and working with children and adults with special needs. I think it would be a really cool certification to have in the school systems. I think being an occupational therapist in a school system would be a very important job and I would love to be someone that could facilitate change in an existing system where help is needed in understanding special circumstances. It would be important to make others aware of what can be done to help individuals get the most out of their time in school and make sure no-one goes unnoticed or not helped.
Aside from that certification, I am interested in helping those with special needs across the lifespan. So, depending on how school goes and where I feel most lead to be, I might would be interested in special certifications such as pediatrics and/or geriatrics.
Those are wonderful areas to pursue within the field of OT!
